Established in 1902 by Fred Lawton, this privately owned family business has seen many changes throughout the century. Based in Huddersfield, the company was originally founded at Lockwood Mills and for many years thereafter at Firth Street Mills.

Today the factory is located at Meltham Mills. This 370,000 square foot site accommodates a wide range of yarn producing activities to provide the carpet and upholstery industry with quality yarn products.


Fred Lawton & Son's state of the art production facility has an ideal production flow covering more than 200,000 square feet on one level. Manufacturing more than 3000 tonnes of yarn each year, the company operates a flexible approach which enables a quick response to customer needs. Committed to building quality into the manufacturing process, Lawtons were one of the first spinners to achieve ISO9002 status in 1994.

The R&D and customer development service with a full scale pilot plant guarantees immediate and efficient response to sampling requirements. All the sales team, who are technically qualified with years of experience, work with customers to develop new and innovative products. Yarns for hand tufting, broadloom tufting, Axminster and Wilton carpets in 100% wool or wool-rich blends combining wool with different fibres(for extra twist lock) can be produced. The company excels in both dry spinning and oil spinning in singles, folded and to all colours, yarn count and twist specifications.
